WHAT IS BELVIQ?

Belviq is a weight loss prescription-only drug manufactured by Eisai, Inc used primarily for weight loss purposes. Its active ingredient, lorcaserin, helped patients lose weight by altering signals in the brain associated with appetite. By reducing appetite triggers and increasing feelings of fullness, patients lost weight due to reduced caloric intake.

WHY WAS BELVIQ RECALLED?

The Belviq weight loss pill was only approved for sale by the FDA on the condition that it continue studies on the medication. Over a five-year period, a double-blind clinical trial found that those taking the medication had a significantly higher risk of certain types of cancers, including:

  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Brain cancer

In addition, the FDA found that the risk of cancer increased the longer a patient was taking the medication.

DO I QUALIFY FOR A BELVIQ Weight Loss Pill RECALL LAWSUIT?

Eisai, Inc. Must Be Held Accountable

At the Shaprio Legal Group, we believe Eisai, Inc. is fully liable for any and all injuries and diagnoses occurring as a result of Belviq for weight loss use. Initial trials indicated that there may be a risk of cancer – even before approval of the drug. Still, despite these findings, Eisai continued to push for drug approval.

By ignoring these important side effects, Eisai put their own profits over the well-being of patients, exercising gross negligence and carelessness. Therefore, we believe they should be fully accountable for their despicable actions.
